My Photography

For this post I have chosen to include just a few of my favourite images that I’ve taken over the years to give you an insight into my style of photography and the areas that I like to focus on.

My favourite items to photograph are flowers so it was quite difficult to pick out a favourite as I have such a wide variety of floral shots in my portfolio. I have chosen to include this one of a daffodil because I love the wide range of detail I managed to capture within the different areas of the flower. I’m also pleased with how vibrantly I’ve captured the colours, I love the warm golden tone created by the use of a shallow depth of field to soften the colours in the petal. These bright colours give the shot a happy feel, reminiscent of a bright spring day which I feel works well with this seasonal flower.
This next shot is one I took whilst in a butterfly garden and is another where I’ve been very pleased with the outcome of the colours. I feel that the complementary colours of the orange and green tones work perfectly together to help make the butterfly stand out. I used a low aperture to create a shallow depth of field to reduce any background clutter that could’ve spoilt the shot resulting in a lovely soft foreground and background to help draw the viewer’s attention to the butterfly in the middle. My only wish with this image is that the butterfly’s eye was sharper as it’s slightly out of focus which bothers me a little bit.

This final shot I have decided to include is another nature based image, this time of a squirrel. I had been desperate to capture one for ages but never had the right equipment so I was delighted when I managed to shoot this one recently after purchasing a 300mm tele-macro lens. Once again, I focused on using a low aperture to throw the background out of focus and bring the attention purely onto the squirrel. I am happy with the amount of detail I have managed to keep in focus within his fur, making it look really soft, especially his bushy tail. It was quite tricky to shoot him however as he kept moving and scurrying off with his food. He wasn’t the easiest model but he’s created a nice picture which overall I’m very pleased with.

I hope you enjoyed that insight into a small portion of my portfolio. I am hoping to post some more posts like this one in the future to show some more of my work in detail. However, if you’d like to look now my current portfolio can be found on my Flickr page at www.flickr.com/hannahbennett22
